Have you heard about Klout? It is a website that measures influence on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn and FourSquare to assign scores. The more of a wide spread reach your campaigns have the higher your score. Of course there is a huge debate over what the site is actually measuring. They just announced they will be rolling out Brand Pages and they began with rolling out a brand page for Red Bull.
Now, when I read this I wasn’t overly thrilled as I don’t think the Klout math is measuring exactly what they claim to measure but that is a different story for another day. But to announce brand pages with Red Bull? I had to roll my eyes. The top brands of course have high Klout scores. Who doesn’t follow Red Bull or retweet their content? Who doesn’t “like” their Facebook page? The top leading brands don’t even have to work that hard because they have name recognition across the United States. They are given thousands of likes just because people recognize their name.
My loyalty lies a little closer to home with small to medium sized businesses that are working hard every day to become that leading or national brand. They have one heck of a climb and if they are waiting in life for the Klout brand pages they might have a little bit of a wait while they roll out the leading brands first. But that’s okay we will wait.
You won’t find Austin Plumbing in the first roll out but that is okay. It’s just the little things and just once I would love for a small to medium sized business be recognized instead of the easy top brand names!
