By now all of you have heard about it. In fact unless you live under a rock you have heard about the billion dollar purchase of Instagram. I have heard about dozens of times on the internet, on the tv and on the phone. It is the story that everyone wants to discuss and talk about. It was only recently after doing some research on the web that I had learned the story of when it all began and I found it pretty darn interesting.
The app project was started by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger and they had no idea so many people would love their app. Their app went live a few minutes after midnight and with in a few hours their app had been downloaded by a few thousand people. That is every app developer’s dream but what was not part of their dream was the demand was much more than they had thought. And they quickly knew they were in trouble as their app kept crashing and neither of them knew how to handle the problem. Kevin began to quickly go through his iPhone to try and call the smartest person he knew. That person just so happened to be a former CTO of Facebook. Perhaps luck was on their side that day because their contact stayed on the phone with them for over 30 minutes and told them what they need to do to get the app up and running again.
Both Kevin and Mike both believe that successful start ups/apps are not only because of what you know but who you know. If you combine the two you are more likely to succeed. Pay attention to who you meet because you never know how they will shape your future. Often we think the only way to success is to succeed all alone so that others can’t profit from our grand ideas. Truth is we could probably get there much faster if we built a supportive network around us that in the end would help us reach our goal.
